How to use arXiv in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can connect to remote MCP servers as plugins. Add Knowra and ChatGPT can search arXiv by topic and exact announcement date, then read a Scout report on each paper’s methods, evidence and stated limitations.

Add Knowra (web or desktop, paid plan)

  1. Open Customize → Plugins → Add → Add custom MCP server.
  2. Paste https://mcp.knowra.app/mcp, select OAuth, and choose Create as a plugin.
  3. Choose Connect Knowra, sign in and approve.

Menu names can change between ChatGPT versions and plans. In our tests, a plugin added on web or desktop also worked in the ChatGPT mobile app.

What to ask

In one test, ChatGPT searched the previous UTC day, picked Accept Changes, Reject Attacks: Robust Memory Management for LLM Agents (arXiv 2610.41056), and wrote up the method, evidence and limitations from the Scout, including that the poisoning results rest on 47 attacked samples. It closed by noting that it had not checked the PDF page by page.

What ChatGPT can see

Tool What it does

get_usage Shows your Scout allowance and reset time.

FAQ

Is this an official arXiv plugin? No. Knowra is an independent MCP server that indexes arXiv. It is not run by arXiv or OpenAI.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan? Adding custom MCP servers in ChatGPT required a paid plan when we tested it.

Does Scout replace reading the paper? No. Scout helps ChatGPT decide which papers deserve a close read and what to check in them. Verify specific claims and numbers in the original paper.
