How to use arXiv in Claude

Add Knowra as a connector and Claude can search arXiv by topic and exact announcement date, then read a Scout report on each paper’s methods, evidence and stated limitations before it answers.

Claude on web or desktop

From the directory. Knowra is listed in Claude’s connector directory: claude.ai/directory/knowra. Open it and choose Connect.

Or add it yourself.

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Paste https://mcp.knowra.app/mcp and keep the default authentication.
  3. Choose Connect, sign in to Knowra and allow access.

Connections you add on web or desktop also worked in the Claude mobile apps in our tests. Add the connector on a computer first.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user knowra https://mcp.knowra.app/mcp

--scope user makes Knowra available in every project. Then:

  1. Run /mcp in Claude Code.
  2. Select knowra and choose Authenticate.
  3. Sign in to Knowra in the browser and allow access.

What to ask

Claude decides when to call the tools, so describe the task and mention Knowra:

What Claude can see

Tool What it does
search_papers Searches arXiv titles, authors and abstracts by topic, with optional from / to dates (UTC, the arXiv announcement date).
get_scout Reads a structured report: problem, method, what was tested, key evidence, verification points and the authors’ stated limitations.
get_usage Shows your Scout allowance and reset time.

All three tools are read-only. Claude can still use its own web search and PDF reading alongside Knowra; how it combines sources is up to Claude.

FAQ

Is there an official arXiv connector for Claude? Knowra is a third-party connector listed in Claude’s directory. It is not run by arXiv.

Does it work on mobile? In our tests, a connector added on web or desktop was available in the Claude mobile apps.

Does Scout replace reading the paper? No. Scout helps Claude decide which papers deserve a close read and what to check in them. Verify specific claims and numbers in the original paper.
